The high demand for professionals with information systems expertise cannot be understated in today's global business environment. Programmers, analysts, and end user support are no longer the only careers where an information technology background is important. As companies continue to employ the latest tools of IT to refine its business processes, several fields have a demand for talented individuals with a management information systems background, including marketing, sales, finance, production, and accounting. Information systems has taken on such strategic importance that managers with an IS background are becoming chief executive officers.
The Department of Management Information Systems offers an interdisciplinary undergraduate program built both on a broad core of studies and special training to develop professionals with a balance of technical skills and business acumen who can take the lead in their field of choice. The curriculum is realized through a variety of instructional techniques to maximize the students' exposure to learning methods they will employ in future training, group projects, and demonstrations as professionals in the marketplace.
The student-run Society for Management Information Systems provides additional access to faculty and networking opportunities with members of industry during company presentations scheduled regularly on campus. An active Industry Advisory Board with representatives from more than 20 companies not only interacts frequently with students through classroom lecture and company tours, but also provides their input on matters that help the MIS department maintain a top-notch undergraduate program.
The Master of Internet Technology further enhances the Terry College of Business' objective to provide students this sought-after mix of hard technology and softer management skills. Employers of these MIT graduates say the program cultivates some of the most advanced and experienced candidates in project management, business systems analysis, and Internet technology management in the job market today.
Our exceptional faculty consists of numerous award-winning professors for outstanding teaching and research. Several of our faculty won Fulbright awards, research grants, and recognition for their service in the professional community. Their research has both a strong international connection and involvement with leading organizations in both the public and private sector. Most of the faculty has authored well-known textbooks in their field in addition to serving as editors with prominent journals.
This excellence in applied research and scholarship is the emphasis for developing candidates in the PhD program to become scholars and teachers who will shine at major universities. Doctoral candidates not only gain in-depth understanding of MIS theories, techniques, and technology, but also study a field of application for their applied technical knowledge such as strategic management, artificial intelligence, and production and operations management. This combination of course work and research prepares PhD candidates to succeed at major universities or as researchers with prominent agencies and corporations.
